This means that between the chest and waist measurements there is a 6 inch drop.
So a 40 inch chest means 34 inch waist. The second rule to remember is the Small, Regular and Long rule!
Small = 30 inch leg
Regular = 32 inch leg
Long = 34 inch leg
So a 40 Regular suit comes with a 40-inch Chest, 34-inch waist and a 32-inch leg.

Jackets...
The Chest and the Shoulders are what makes a jacket - we do not advise getting these altered even if you find a tailor who will do it. Sleeves can be shortened to show the shirt cuff according to your taste.
Trousers...
The trouser waist can be altered up to 1 inch (2 inches can be done but this is pushing it as the shape of the trousers will change). The trouser length can be shortened, as you require.
