The Groom's Wedding Planner

Twelve months is plenty of time to plan a wedding, right?
Nope - you need to set the ball rolling as early as possible if you want to get to the church on time. Our checklist of essential tasks will help you plan ahead.

9 months to go:

  1. 1

    Decide on a menu.

A tasting session with your caterer will help you choose the most appropriate dishes.

  2. 2

    Order the alcohol.

Find out if glassware is included.

  3. 3

    Book your buttonholes.

Talk to your florist about an arrangement that will go with the bridal bouquet.

  4. 4

Discuss who will speak at the wedding.

A few months' notice will give them time to get over their nerves.

8 months to go:

  1. 1

    Plan the ceremony.

If you are having a civil ceremony, investigate which readings are allowed.

  2. 2

    Agree on your guest list.

If you are having a civil ceremony, investigate which readings are allowed.

  3. 3

    Face the music.

If you're having a traditional church wedding, book an organist.

  4. 4

    Plan your trip.

Extra honeymoon treats such as spa sessions should ideally be arranged in advance.

7 months to go:

  1. 1

Decide on your order of service.

Agree your plans with the minister or registrar and print booklets for all your guests, for your ushers to give on arrival.

  2. 2

    Order the invitations.

Take this opportunity to buy place cards and menus from your printer too.

  3. 3

    Choose a cake.

A wedding cake is just one option. Try the traditional French pile of profiteroles or go totally off-piste with a stack of cheeses.

  4. 4

Meet up with your best man.

Let him know what you will expect of him over the coming months.
