The winter fabrics that always cut it
Woven to last.
From moleskin to corduroy, flannel to tweed, these are our hardest-working winter fabrics.
Flannel
There's more to this fabric than Kurt Cobain in shadow-checked shirts, or media professionals cosplaying as lumberjacks.
Flannel goes through a process called napping to create its signature fuzzy texture. The result is an incredibly soft cloth that also traps heat, making it a perfect choice for icy days. We used a wool and cashmere iteration from E. Thomas to make a gold-hued suit that's a standout of our AW25 collection.
Corduroy
The signature ridges (or wales) of corduroy are ideal for keeping heat locked in during cold spells. Don't be fooled by its softness – its durability has made it a cornerstone of workwear for decades.
This season, we turned to an ultra-refined cord to create versatile overshirts in earthy shades. Could these pieces stand up to the rigours of hard graft? We think so. Put them to work as your most reliable layers through winter into spring.
Wool
The original cold-weather fibre, wool naturally breathes and insulates at the same time. Our zipped polo shirt in pure wool and expanded collection of Merino-blend knits are surefire winter layering staples when the mercury drops outside, but the office heating is on full-blast.
For something even more luxurious, go for our considered selection of jumpers, scarves and accessories in pure cashmere. A hint of the noble fibre is used to make this season's new Epsom coat impeccably soft.
Tweed
Hardwearing tweed has historic connections to rural life. Even if you don’t live in the countryside or spend the weekend shooting grouse with the lads on your ancestral estate, you should still consider adding this iconic fabric to your wardrobe.
Our gold herringbone-tweed suit comes in an easy-to-layer relaxed fit – all balanced by the gravitas of a double-breasted closure. In a nod to tweed’s fieldsporting roots, the jacket is patched with generous pockets.
Moleskin
Smooth, velvety and durable – moleskin is a densely woven cotton with a brushed finish. This season, we’ve cut it into overshirts, zipped jackets and single-breasted suiting.
With a natural shoulder line and smooth handfeel, our unlined moleskin suit jacket moves with ease to the rhythms of everyday life.
Wear it with a shirt, tie and matching trousers for a tailored look that’s softer around the edges, or layer over knitwear to add polish to weekend looks.
