What to wear for every dress code

Outfit ideas for all the season's invites.

Dress codes are both a blessing and a curse. Sure, half of the work's already been done for you, but what do they actually mean? And what are some of the options available to you? We've broken down three popular dress codes - smart, formal and black-tie - and put together an outfit that just works, wherever you're headed this season.

Smart

For a more casual affair like work drinks or a festive dinner with friends, try combining formal pieces with casual elements for a more paired-back take on smart. Look to lightweight knits in neutral tones like a roll neck or a crew, and add a pair of contrasting trousers cut from a wintry cloth, like flannel or wool. As for accessories, a subtle pattern with a similar colour palette won't look out of place – our patterned hank cut from Bottinelli silk, placed in the bottom pocket of the jacket, adds a little extra interest.

Formal

Sometimes, the occasion calls for a bit more finesse. This is where the suit truly shines – make sure yours is extra special by choosing one cut from Italian cloth. This classic brown pinstripe is crafted from Barberis wool, one of the oldest mills in the world. With a brushed finish for a softer handfeel, it'll feel really special on – especially when paired with tie cut from Bottinelli silk. The subtle pinstripes make it smart enough for the office, but work equally as well beyond it too.

Black-tie

When it's time for black-tie, you have to pull out all the stops. For a contemporary take on a classic look, try a relaxed fit tuxedo. With more room in the torso and through the leg, it's a bit roomier than a standard tux, but still feels sleek. Match it up with a silk bow-tie and a marcella shirt (make sure you wear a dress shirt over a standard white button down - they're key to completing a black-tie look).
